What is Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?

The removal procedure involves the removal of the scar tissue, capsules or implants within the breasts. The replacement procedure is where new implants are inserted, which may be the same size, bigger or smaller. Your surgeon can advise what is suitable at the time of your consultation. Collectively, the procedures are known as re-augmentation.

Who Is Suitable For Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?

A woman’s breast size is determined by several factors. These include:

  • Family history
  • Body weight
  • Hormonal status

There are several reasons why women may consider the procedures:

  • You may have noticed skin rashes, hardening, deflation or pain and discomfort.
  • Implant rupture or leaking.
  • Personal safety concerns.
  • Unsatisfactory shape or size.
  • Concerns regarding breastfeeding.
  • Change in body weight, with the breasts becoming an ill fit.
  • Embarrassment and self-consciousness.

As a result, these women may decide to reduce these issues through removal and replacement surgeries, such as a Mastopexy or a Capsulectomy.

What You Need To Know About Breast Implant Removal and Replacement

  • The surgeries will be performed under general
  • They will take between 1-2 hours each to complete.
  • The surgeon will generally use your old scar to remove the old implant.
  • The replacement procedure occurs as the old implant is being removed.
  • Replacement procedures include: New implants; Breast lift (Mastopexy); Capsulectomy (removal of tissue/capsule).
  • A Mastopexy may be used if you have excess skin after removal, with the uplift putting your nipple back in its original position.
  • A Capsulectomy is used when the capsule has contracted or the tissue is causing discomfort, altering breast appearance.
  • If the patient requires a removal without the replacement of new implants, an uplift is sometimes recommended to improve breast shape. Scarring is expected.
  • The patient is usually discharged the same day.
  • The breasts may feel bruised, tender and swollen for several weeks
  • Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work.
  • No strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks.
  • As with all scars, they will slowly fade over six to twelve months. However, they never disappear.

Most women will need time to heal before breastfeeding. Being able to produce less milk than beforehand is possible, though a variety of techniques, such as using breast pumps, are available to help stimulate milk flow.
